Site Reliability Engineering

Incident Frequency Benchmark

Incident volume on an engineering rotation is partly a property of the systems the team owns and partly a property of the team's surface area. Pagerduty's State of Digital Operations report publishes an annual distribution of incident rates across tens of thousands of on-call rotations, which lets a team compare its load against peers in the same domain. Four inputs above place a specific rotation on that distribution.

Incident Frequency Benchmark

Place your team's incidents-per-engineer rate on the Pagerduty State of Digital Operations distribution. Inputs: monthly count, rotation size, severity, domain.

• Evaluate current state against industry benchmarks

• Identify optimization opportunities

• Support capacity planning and cost decisions

What does this tool tell you?
Place your team's incidents-per-engineer rate on the Pagerduty State of Digital Operations distribution. Inputs: monthly count, rotation size, severity, domain.
What affects the result most?
Place your team's incidents-per-engineer rate on the Pagerduty State of Digital Operations distribution. Inputs: monthly count, rotation size, severity, domain.
How should I use the result?
The calculation is deterministic — the same inputs always produce the same output — so the most useful workflow is to vary one input at a time and see which factor moves the result most. That tells you where to focus your attention before committing to a decision.
